Johnson, a standout defensive back at McEachern High School in Powder Springs, Ga., becomes the latest in-state prospect to join Kirby Smart’s recruiting class.
The decision marks another twist in Johnson’s recruitment. He was previously committed to Alabama before switching his pledge to Auburn. Now, the three-star cornerback has decided to stay home and play for the Bulldogs.
Georgia Never Stopped Recruiting Johnson
While Johnson was committed to Auburn, Georgia never stopped recruiting him.
In an Aug. 19 interview with DawgTime, Johnson said Georgia and Miami were the two programs still pursuing him despite his commitment to the Tigers.
At the time, Johnson maintained that Auburn was the best fit for him, pointing to its coaching staff’s leadership. However, he also acknowledged Georgia’s interest and explained why the Bulldogs believed he could fit into their defensive system.
“It really just tells me that they look at me as a good physical corner because Georgia’s a physical school,” Johnson said. “They feel I fit in there and into their program.”
One of the driving forces behind Georgia’s pursuit was defensive backs coach Donte Williams, who stayed in consistent contact with Johnson throughout his recruitment.
“Coach Donte, he checks in with me every day,” Johnson said. “Anytime he’s not busy, he’ll call me and stuff like that. I send him clips of me from practice, clips from games and stuff like that.”
That relationship helped keep Georgia involved even while Johnson remained pledged to an SEC rival.
During the August interview, Johnson was noncommittal about whether he would visit Athens during the season, saying the decision would ultimately be up to him.
Less than two months later, the Bulldogs have secured his commitment.
Reuniting With a Familiar Face
Johnson’s decision also reunites him with a familiar face.
His McEachern teammate, four-star linebacker Joakim Gouda, is already committed to Georgia as part of the Bulldogs’ 2027 class. The two defensive prospects now have the chance to keep playing together at the college level.
Landing both Johnson and Gouda gives Georgia two defensive commitments from the same high school program while strengthening its recruiting presence in metro Atlanta.
A Timely Flip Ahead of Auburn Matchup
The timing of Johnson’s flip adds another storyline to this weekend’s matchup.
Georgia and Auburn will renew the Deep South’s Oldest Rivalry on Saturday, but the Bulldogs have already landed a recruiting victory over the Tigers before kickoff.
For Johnson, the decision brings another turn in a recruitment that has included commitments to three different SEC programs.
For Georgia, it represents another successful in-state recruiting effort and a payoff from the staff’s continued pursuit of a prospect who had already committed elsewhere.
As Johnson explained in August, the Bulldogs believed his physical style of play made him a natural fit for their defense.
“They feel I fit in there and into their program,” Johnson said.
